The DC Underground Take Over: tINI at Dirty Bar

tINY

Mother’s day is normally a day when people spend time with their families and just relax.  Well on this past Sunday, May 15, 2013, there was an abnormal flourish of activity in Washington, DC’s Dupont Circle neighborhood.  That was because on this day, after all of the Mother’s Day gifts were exchanged, the true lovers of deep house and techno music converged to Dirty Bar for tINI’s special Mother’s Day performance which was sponsored by Deep Secrets and Nomad entertainment groups.

tINI is one of Germany’s rising stars in the techno and deep house genre commonly referred to nowadays as the underground scene within electronic music.  She is one of the few females in industry and has been breaking ground ever since she signed with Desolat record label based in Germany back in 2008.  Since then she has traveled with Marco Carola on his tours, held residencies in Ibiza, and is currently conducting tours of her own throughout Europe and the Americas.  Also worthy of mention, in the summer of 2012 she even hosted her own Radioshow “It could be worse”.  Well, enough with the bio let’s get to the show!

So normally, my articles are from the objective point of view of party-goers.  However, this time I would like to talk about the performance based on my experience.  I have been a club-goer in DC for than 8 years and have always liked listening to techno and deep house music but never knew there was an audience for it in the city.  How did I find out about this event, more or less by accident!  A friend of mine invited me to a rooftop party and this is how my adventure started.tiny dc

Upon arriving to Dupont circle that evening outside of Dirty Bar, I could hear hear the loud rhythmic techno beats piercing the sky, filling the air with its melody.  I thought to myself, “Am I at the right place?”  This type of music is unfamiliar to me especially at the venue that I occasionally frequented during weekend nights which plays more commercial mainstream house music.  As I went up the stairs following the melody, I noticed upon arrival to the rooftop that it was a very mixed crowd of people with different fashion styles ranging from normal, preppy, punk-rock and even a bit hipsterish.  However, amongst this diversity there was a key element that united them all; the music.

As I approached the area of the lounge where my friends were congregated, that was the first time that I laid eyes on the curly blond-haired German female DJ/Producer tINI herself.  Then, everything just clicked for me and I realized that I truly was in a world where nothing mattered and everyone could just be themselves and embrace their love for the music, and dance the night away.  tINI played for what seemed to me like an eternity, as you could really felt like you were in a time lapse the way the music was mixed from one track to the next.  It was as if the first track had no beginning and the last track had no end; but only distinguishable by the subtle difference in melody and tempo of each one.  tINI played some of her own productions, as well as a number of other well known tracks.  Overall for me, it was an experience that could only be described as mystifying, enchanting, and “simply tINI”.  The DC underground was truly alive in spirit that night! No one knows what the future has in store for this scene, but one thing is for certain that it is no longer hidden.
